Presepe
Durante il periodo natalizio nella chiesa di S.Donato viene allestito un presepe artistico in stile napoletano, con dei pezzi originali del pittore Massimo Rao, che ha vissuto a Pornello dal 1981 fino alla sua prematura scomparsa nel 1996.
Nativity
At Christmas time, in the church of St. Donato an artistic nativity scene is set up in Neapolitan style, with original pieces by the painter Massimo Rao, who lived in Pornello from 1981 until his untimely death in 1996.
Massimo Rao, pittore di origine sannita ma di respiro internazionale. “Aristocratico” (nel senso spirituale del termine), convinto che l’Arte potesse evitare, quantomeno ritardare l’incombente “inverno dello Spirito” era tanto orgoglioso da ignorare, a New York, i galleristi che lo tallonavano con le loro “proposte”, e tanto umile da allestire, ogni Natale, il presepe nella chiesetta di Pornello, dove viveva.

Massimo Rao, painter of Samnite origin but of international scope. He was “aristocratic” (in the spiritual sense of the word) and he believed that Art could avoid – or delay at least – the impending “winter of Spirit”. He was so proud to ignore the gallery owners who pursued him with their “proposals” in New York and yet so humble as to set up, every Christmas, the crib in the little church of Pornello, where he lived.
La tecnica è veloce, la definizione del disegno sicura. L’artista ama i panneggi, gli ampi drappi, i turbanti, tutto ciò che è suscettibile di piega. Egli è rinascimentale, barocco, neoclassico e romantico, indifferentemente e sempre con talento, ma è soprattutto il pittore della luna. La luna che domina i suoi quadri in modo ossessivo, conturbante.

The technique is fast, the definition of the drawing is confident. The artist loves drapes, large drapes, turbans, everything that can be folded. He is Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Romantic, indifferently and always talented, but above all he is the painter of the moon. The moon dominates his paintings in an obsessive, upsetting way.
